Cattle Drive in the Rain

Two weekends ago Marc was able to participate in a cattle drive that took 143 head of cattle from Burston Ponds in Mona towards Nephi then up the canyon west of Nephi and then across Dog Valley to Ferner Valley—a total of 17 miles—and it took all day on Saturday, crack of dawn til 7pm that evening.

This was the first time for this herd of cattle to be driven by men and horses, usually they are trailered to where they graze for the summer. So it was challenging to get them to go where they needed to be because they hadn't gone that way before.

They started off with a group of ten guys and then ended with five. The rain was a huge factor in the time it took to drive the cattle. It also just made for a really wet yet, adventurous horse ride. One guy even ended up being taken by ambulance after being thrown from his horse and landing on his back on a rock. (We found out later that he had broken 2 vertebrae.) Luckily he was given a Priesthood Blessing that I am sure helped his situation not be worse than it was.

Marc said it was crazy driving the cattle across I-15 in the pounding-pouring rain while the highway patrol held back traffic. He said there were some tough spots, especially when our horse, Blue, looked as if she was getting collicky and he had to take someone else's horse and just walk her behind the rest of the way.

Here are some pictures that a friend of his took on the drive. The camera wasn't the best, but, hey I am glad to have something.

Here's Marc on Blue—I wish this wasn't blurry because I can tell it would have been good

How is it that the pictures of Marc are blurry and the ones of just the cows are clear! That camera is a cow lover.

Cute Cowboys! N. loves to western dance now and last week had a blind date with a cowboy who turned out to be the son of our friends! We had a good laugh at that.

oh my goodness. how in the world do you end up doing that? It really does look like a lot of work and a lot of fun too. I hope that guy will be alright that fell off the horse. how many miles did they have to go? Did they get paid or pay to do it? Who's idea is this, can't they truck them to where they need to go? It is like in the olden days. what a trip.

Wow! That is cool! That is something you read about, watch movies about, but not actually hear about anyone doing. Now you should write a book about cowboys- haha! Love ya Rach!

For Marc this was a volunteer thing. He doesn't care to get paid, he just wants to be involved. He really loved every moment of it! The do usually trailer the cows this was a new thing for them and it was like in the olden days--well, kind of, there were a few guys on four-wheelers...
